Why do so many Waterloo alums choose to be at Commure? We asked a few of them to share their perspective.
You likely had several options — why did you choose Commure?
Winnie Fong (Biomedical Engineering ‘19) Senior Software Engineer: I’ve always envisioned myself working at the intersection of health and technology. Hands-on, meaningful work was exactly what I was looking for. Dhruv, our CTO, had such a clear, inspiring vision for where the company and team were headed. His energy was super motivating—it made me feel excited about the potential, and confident that this was a team I’d grow a lot with. That really resonated with me, because I’m super motivated by doing work that has impact and being surrounded by people who feel the same way.
Aswin Logan (Computer Engineering ‘21) Software Engineer: I wanted to work at a company with a startup culture - somewhere fast-paced, collaborative, and with real ownership. Also, I was set on being in healthcare because of the meaningful, long-term impact the work has. It felt like the perfect opportunity for me to grow as an engineer while contributing to a mission I care about. Everyone genuinely cares about the work they are doing, and that really stuck with me. I wanted to be part of a team where the mission actually matters to people day to day.
Jordan Chow (Mechatronics Engineering ‘24) Software Engineer: I have always gravitated towards startups because I love fast-paced environments and the ownership involved, which aligns perfectly with Commure’s values - speed above all else and extreme ownership. I was also interested in the breadth of products Commure offered, from AI solutions to hardware products. The on-site aspect was also interesting, being able to visit sites and customers sounded like a really valuable experience to me. Commure has had an impressive growth trajectory, and I felt like it would be a great place to start my career to learn more about what makes a startup successful.

How have you grown?
Winnie: I’ve grown a lot—both technically and in terms of confidence. One of the biggest things is being trusted to own projects from start to finish, which means making decisions, solving problems on the fly, and taking full responsibility for the outcome. I’ve also gotten way better at communicating and navigating ambiguity—when you’re building something new, there’s not always a clear answer, and that’s pushed me to become more thoughtful in how I approach problems. I feel way more confident in my abilities now than I did even a year ago.
Aswin: I came in more frontend-focused, but working at Commure has pushed me to grow across the stack and become a much more complete full-stack engineer. I’ve also grown a lot personally. I am naturally more introverted, but being part of this team has helped me become more outspoken and communicate more confidently.
Jordan: At Commure, I have really inherited the company’s culture and values. I feel a deep connection to our customers and pride myself on building features that improve their lives. I have learned that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and my team and coworkers are living proof of that. I have also grown as a person from joining Commure, moving to another country, and starting a new life for myself, exploring everything California has to offer.

What is something you are proud of accomplishing at Commure?
Winnie: One project I’m super proud of is the R&D work I did around detecting platelets and hemoglobin on the Athelas device. It was a pretty complex challenge. We had to understand how the analytes present in a blood sample, figure out how to capture them in images, train a model to detect and count them, and then make sure the results aligned with a predicate device. It was definitely one of the most interdisciplinary projects I’ve worked on, and there were a lot of unknowns we had to figure out along the way. Seeing it all come together has been really rewarding.
Aswin: I’m really proud of leading the Commure Vision product as an engineer. One of the great things about working at Commure is that as you grow, you get real ownership over the products and features you work on. I’ve been lucky to take the lead on Commure Vision within the Strongline team, and it’s been an amazing opportunity to drive something from the ground up.
Jordan: I am proud of my work during the Athena Offensive, shipping end-to-end features under such a tight deadline. My team and I were able to achieve feature parity with one of the largest healthcare companies in a matter of weeks. We shipped extremely fast, iterated back and forth, worked closely with sites, and eventually went on site to validate our designs and new features. It was an awesome experience to ship something from 0 to 1 and visit a site to see how excited they were.

What would you tell another Waterloo student considering Commure today?
Winnie: I’d say if you’re looking for growth, this is the place to be. You’ll be working with smart, driven people who care about what they’re building—and who are also just really great teammates. It’s a place where you won’t be boxed into one thing; you’ll get ownership, real responsibilities, and a chance to make an impact early on. Also, the leadership here is really strong and approachable, which makes a big difference in your day-to-day experience. You’ll learn not only technical skills, but also how to build, iterate, and think like an owner. Commure is definitely worth considering if you want something challenging and fulfilling.
Aswin: I’d tell them that if they’re looking for a place where they can grow fast, take real ownership, and work on meaningful problems in healthcare, Commure is a great choice. It’s not like a big tech company where you might be stuck doing something small—you’ll have impact, responsibility, and a team that actually cares about what they’re building.
Jordan: If you are looking for a place to accelerate your career and learn every day, I would suggest Commure. We are constantly solving unique problems and making providers’ lives easier. It is extremely rewarding to see the work you do have an impact on customers, especially when visiting them on site and seeing how the work you do makes a difference. It is an exceptional place to work with top talent, a fast pace, and a welcoming and inclusive work environment.
