Inside Summa Health's 96% Ambient AI Adoption

About the Organization

Summa Health is an integrated health system serving Greater Akron, Ohio, with two hospitals, twenty health centers, 870+ inpatient beds, 8,000+ employees, and 1.6M+ patient encounters annually. Together with General Catalyst and HATCo, Summa Health is building a proactive, community-based model of care in Greater Akron. Commure Ambient AI is the documentation layer of that model.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Executive Summary

Summa Health scaled Commure Ambient AI from 50 providers in January to more than 600 activated by September, including residents. Active use among eligible providers climbed from 44% in April to 96% in September. More than 10,000 patient visits a week are now scribed automatically, returning 1,929 provider hours to the organization in September alone.

Documentation time per note dropped 44% for providers using Ambient AI on 80% or more of their visits, and 25% for those using it between 60% and 80% of the time. The return concentrates in that top band, where 74% of providers now sit. That is why Summa's leadership managed utilization as the number that mattered.

Building on this foundation of automation, Summa is now planning to pilot Autonomous Coding in Cardiology and other specialty areas, extending the same platform to suggest ICD-10, CPT, and E/M codes directly from the note. Commure’s Autonomous Coding has 93%+ human-audited accuracy when deployed at other clients.

Key Success Drivers

Clinical and Administrative Leadership
Each department is led by a physician-administrator pair that owns its weekly adoption number and committed target. Every specialty moved up by double digits.
Structured On-Site Support
Orthopedics ran the model first with 100+ hours of dedicated Commure support across three weeks. Practice managers flagged who needed help, and each got time with a specialist.
Specialty Champions
Summa trains champions inside each specialty to shepherd adoption in their own groups, backed by two-hour in-person sessions, specialty-specific workflows, and pre-built macros.
100% Utilization Goal
Summa set a goal of 100% utilization, with leadership evaluating exceptions tied to patient populations, patient preferences, workflow, and its education mission.
Forward Deployed Engineering
Commure engineers embedded with Summa surfaced product friction and fixed it inside the deployment window. Workflows were decomposed by specialty and appointment type, allowing engineers to quickly build novel solutions to granular problems inhibiting efficiency.

Extending Into Platform

Summa is now taking the same adoption playbook beyond ambulatory care. The next phase extends Ambient AI to hundreds of providers in the Emergency Department, inpatient settings, and ancillary groups such as outpatient therapy. Summa will use the levers that drove ambulatory adoption: clinical and administrative leadership, structured on-site support, specialty champions, and a clear utilization goal.

With documentation in place, Summa is building coding on top of it by planning an Autonomous Coding pilot. Summa and Commure also plan to explore further opportunities upstream in referral optimization and downstream in revenue cycle management.

Voices from the Frontline

"One of our providers, who is typically cautious about adopting new technology, shared that ambient listening was helpful from day one. They told me it is saving them time and generating high-quality notes."

Dr. Justin Catlett
VP and CMIO

"It’s hard to overstate how game changing the Commure Ambient technology has been for my practice in a positive way. Not only has our documentation become more streamlined, more accurate, more timely and more complete — it has reinvigorated my joy of seeing and evaluating patients in the busy office setting. It has completely transformed my workflow from one of being glued to the computer and typing, to now be 'present' and more deeply engaged with patients and their family members. This is a big satisfier for patients, but on a personal level has allowed me to reclaim multiple hours of my time during the week. Physicians tend to be somewhat resistant to new technology especially once we have created a workflow that we feel works well for our practice. I've discovered a passion in helping guide my fellow colleagues into adopting the technology and seeing them unlock the value in their own practice. One colleague in particular, recently stated that this is the most transformative technology that he has ever used in his entire 20 year career — I couldn't agree more!"

Mark Pozsgay
DO

"Ambient listening has allowed me to better focus on the patient in front of me, instead of needlessly typing away during their visit. This has helped to bring back the human connection to my practice, and reinforces the fact that I am listening, and that I care."

Christopher Repetsky
MD, DABFM, FAAFP, FRSM

"Commure ambient listening technology has improved my documentation efficiency, saving on average an hour a day for a full office day. More importantly, it has shifted my time from reviewing and documenting to direct patient interactions. Additionally, it more effectively captures the complexity of my visits to accurately represent the discussion and time spent with my patients. An interesting note is that patients are interested and supportive of the technology, specifically stating that they are 'in favor of anything that makes my job easier' and more completely documents 'the details.'"
