What You Need to Know
- Mentalyc is an AI scribe built for therapists and psychiatrists, with 100+ behavioral health note templates.
- Mentalyc plans range from $19.99 to $119.99 per month, with note caps from 40 to 330 per month.
- Practices that need real-time transcription, broader EHR integration, or unlimited notes should compare alternatives.
What is Mentalyc, and who is it built for?
Mentalyc is an AI documentation platform designed for mental health professionals: therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.¹ Unlike general-purpose AI scribes, Mentalyc focuses exclusively on behavioral health.
How does Mentalyc work?
Mentalyc uses a record-then-process workflow rather than real-time streaming transcription.¹ The four steps are:
- Capture. The clinician records the session through the Mentalyc app, uploads a pre-recorded audio file, dictates, or types a session summary.
- Process. After the session ends, Mentalyc transcribes the audio and analyzes the clinical content. The platform identifies clinical themes, treatment interventions, and diagnostic indicators.
- Generate. Mentalyc produces a structured progress note in the chosen format. The Pro plan and above include treatment planning, supervision notes, and CPT code computation.¹
- Review. The note appears in the Mentalyc dashboard for review, edit, and approval before export or transfer to a supported EHR.
Supported formats include SOAP, DAP, BIRP, PIRP, GIRP, PIE, and SIRP, plus 100+ custom templates.¹ Templates cover modalities like CBT, DBT, EMDR, ABA, play therapy, couples therapy, and psychiatric evaluations.¹
The AI Treatment Planner generates treatment plans with SMART goals tied to session content.¹ Alliance Genie tracks therapeutic alliance indicators across sessions, including engagement and rapport patterns.¹ Full Alliance Genie access needs the Pro plan or higher.²
How much does Mentalyc cost?
Mentalyc lists four individual plans and a team plan, with monthly and annual billing.² Note caps reset monthly and notes can be used flexibly across the billing cycle.
The Mini plan covers basic recording, SOAP and DAP formats, intake notes, and consent forms.² Basic adds limited Alliance Genie access and the AI Treatment Planner. Pro unlocks full Alliance Genie, supervision notes, EMDR and play therapy and psychiatry templates, and CPT code computation. Super adds group therapy notes and priority support. Team plans include unlimited notes for multi-clinician practices.²
Mentalyc offers a 14-day free trial with 15 notes and no credit card required.²
How does Mentalyc handle EHRs, HIPAA, and data?
Mentalyc is described as EHR-agnostic and can be used alongside any EHR system through note export.¹ It also offers direct integrations with six mental-health-specific EHRs:
- TherapyNotes
- ICANotes
- TheraNest
- Valant
- SimplePractice
- TheraBill
These integrations focus on note transfer rather than native bidirectional API write-back.¹ Bidirectional write-back is the pattern where structured data flows directly into chart fields and patient data is pulled in automatically. Mentalyc does not offer native write-back to Epic, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, or other general medical EHRs.
Mentalyc is HIPAA compliant, PHIPA certified, and SOC 2 Type II audited.¹ A Business Associate Agreement is provided to all customers. Recordings are encrypted, retained up to 3 days for note fixes and retries, and then automatically deleted.¹ Mentalyc states that data is not used for AI model training and is not shared with third parties.¹
Where does Mentalyc fall short?
Mentalyc has known gaps that matter for some practices:
- No real-time streaming transcription. Mentalyc uses a record-then-process workflow.¹ Transcription happens after the session, not on screen during the visit.
- Monthly note caps on individual plans. The Mini plan caps at 40 notes per month, Basic at 100, Pro at 160, Super at 330.² Therapists with caseloads above 40 visits per week need the Super plan or a Team seat.
- Limited EHR integration depth. Direct integrations are six mental-health-specific systems with note-transfer workflows.¹ There is no native bidirectional API write-back to Epic, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, or AdvancedMD.
- Mental health only. Mentalyc does not support primary care, surgical specialties, or other clinical settings. Multi-specialty practices need a separate scribe for non-behavioral-health visits.
- No practice automation beyond notes. Mentalyc does not include AI receptionist, fax management, billing automation, claim submission, eligibility verification, or payment collection.
- Trustpilot reliability reports. Mentalyc holds a 4.4 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot from 65 reviews.⁹ Common positive reviews cite time savings; common negative reviews cite crashes, freezing, and slow uploads.⁹
What does peer-reviewed research show about AI scribes like Mentalyc?
Mentalyc has no peer-reviewed studies of its own product. The closest evidence is on ambient AI scribes broadly, which is the category Mentalyc sits in. Three findings shape what to expect from a tool like Mentalyc.
A 2017 study of human scribes in dermatology tracked physician documentation time per patient. Time dropped from 6.1 minutes to 3.0 minutes, a reduction of roughly half.³ A 2024 Health Affairs study tied EHR documentation time directly to other clinical work. Each extra hour on the EHR was associated with a 7.1% drop in same-day review of outside records.⁴ ⁵
A 2026 review ties the capture-and-draft workflow to documentation-burden reduction.⁶ A 2026 study of AI documentation tools for mental health providers reported high adoption and positive feedback without hurting note quality.⁷
Two findings cut the other way. A 2026 JAMA Psychiatry study of AI scribe use in primary-care psychiatric documentation found two effects. AI scribe use was associated with greater documented neuropsychiatric symptoms compared with human scribes or no scribe. The same study found a lower likelihood of a depression intervention being recorded.⁸
Documentation patterns can shift when an AI scribe is in the loop. Clinician review of every draft catches the shift.
How Commure Scribe fits the gaps Mentalyc leaves open
Commure Scribe is an AI scribe used by 75,000+ clinicians across a wide range of specialties, including Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, among others. Each Mentalyc gap above maps to a Commure Scribe capability.
- Real-time ambient scribing, not record-then-process. When the clinician clicks End Recording, a structured SOAP note appears within seconds. The clinician can stay present in the room during the session and put down the computer and actively listen. Suggested ICD-10 and CPT codes are generated in a separate tab. The clinician reviews, edits, and finalizes before anything posts. 90%+ of providers reduce clinical documentation time and digital fatigue, and clinicians report an average chart close time of 43 seconds.
- No monthly note caps for solo and small practices. Solo therapists and small practices (1 to 5 providers) get unlimited transcription, custom templates, AI Copilot, suggested ICD-10 and CPT codes, and Admin Copilot for $89 monthly or $59 billed annually. Mentalyc's note caps top out at 330 per month on the Super plan.
- 60+ EHR integrations, including general medical EHRs. Copy and paste is available for solo and small practices. Medium and large group practices can access one-click sync with EHR for bidirectional workflows. Mentalyc's six mental-health-specific integrations do not extend to Epic, athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks.
- 25 specialties, not behavioral health only. Commure Scribe covers Psychiatry, Behavioral Health, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, and Physical Therapy, among others. Multi-specialty practices use one scribe across the whole team. Mentalyc is mental health only.
- Admin Copilot for documentation beyond the note. Admin Copilot helps clinicians with documentation tasks generated from the encounter, including prior authorization requests, work excuse letters, and patient emails. Mentalyc covers progress notes but not the surrounding administrative documentation.
- Production-scale reliability. Commure Scribe processes 25M+ patient encounters annually, with 99.4% transcription accuracy and 90 languages with automatic detection. The Trustpilot reliability reports against Mentalyc do not appear at the same scale in Commure Scribe customer feedback.
Solo and small group practices get a 7-day free trial with no credit card required. Medium and large group practices get custom pricing, one-click EHR sync, custom AI workflows, live onboarding, and ROI analytics.
