What Is the Ambience AI Scribe, and Who Is It Built For?

Ambience Healthcare sells an ambient charting and coding platform to health systems. The buyer is the system rather than the clinician. There is no pricing page, no trial and no self-serve signup anywhere on the site. The sitemap lists 60 URLs and none of them is pricing-related.¹ A demo request form is the only way in.²

That shapes who this review helps. A clinician reading it is almost certainly weighing a tool their organization already shortlisted, not picking one to buy. For options a practice can buy directly, see the guide to the best AI medical scribes.

The line is broader than a scribe. It runs across three suites. Pre-Visit covers Patient Summary, Conditions Advisor, Hospital Stay Summary and sync tools for schedules, problem lists and patient lists. In-Visit covers the Ambient Scribe itself. Alongside it sit Multiple Speaker Attribution, Translation for Documentation, Live Audio Recap, Chart Chat and Medication Order Assist. Post-Visit covers Referral Letters, Discharge Note Generator, an HPI Generator for the history of present illness, Assessment & Plan Generator and ED MDM Generator.³ A Nursing suite has been announced separately and does not appear on the products page.

In August 2026 the company introduced Chorus. It calls Chorus "the shared AI infrastructure that powers every Ambience product."⁴

One naming note matters when comparing reviews. Other write-ups still use AutoScribe, AutoCDI, AutoAVS, AutoRefer and AutoPrep. The current product and solution pages have dropped those names. They still appear in older blog posts on the same site, and AutoScribe still shows in the Trust Center metadata.

How Does the Ambience AI Scribe Work Inside the EHR?

Ambience publishes integration detail for three EHRs, and the level of detail differs by vendor.

For Epic, Ambience says the tool is "built directly into Hyperspace and Haiku using SMART on FHIR and Ambient APIs." It adds that it "functions like a native part of Epic."⁵ It joined Epic's Toolbox program for Ambient Voice Recognition in August 2025.⁶ That places it inside Haiku across outpatient, emergency and inpatient settings, with ICD-10 suggestions in the flow.

For Oracle Cerner, it "uses FHIR and REST APIs to write directly into Cerner Millennium."⁵ A 2024 post adds that notes are visible and editable in DynamicDocumentation Note Viewer and in MPages.⁷ That post, dated 2024, also describes the product as the only AI tool spanning both Cerner and Epic end to end.

For athenahealth, Ambience says it "integrates seamlessly into real-time chart workflows" through the Marketplace and MDP program.⁵ That page names no APIs or EHR screens.

SMART on FHIR support is a federal requirement rather than a vendor feature. The ONC Cures Act Final Rule set a deadline of December 31, 2022 for certified health IT developers to provide FHIR-based application programming interfaces.⁸ The Toolbox listing and the named EHR screens are specific to Ambience.

No EHRs beyond Epic, Cerner and athenahealth are published. How write-back differs between vendors is covered in our guide to EHR integrations. Implementation is given as a four-week average with white-glove support. That is a platform-wide figure rather than an Epic-specific one.⁵

What Can Ambience Do?

Ambience packages coding as separately named products rather than as a feature of the note.

Named coding products cover ICD-10 Code Assist, E/M Code Advisor, an HCC Compliance Validator for hierarchical condition category coding, Modifier 25 Advisor and Add-On Code Assist.³ Inpatient and emergency variants sit alongside them. The HCC Compliance Validator "continuously reviews documentation in real time to flag HCC-linked problems that lack MEAT support."³ The Assessment & Plan Generator writes problem-based notes with ICD-10 backing and MEAT support.

No general CPT or procedure-coding product is named on the published pages. The emergency medicine page does name Procedure Capture and Structured Billing Documentation, both framed as documentation rather than coding.

Ambience publishes accuracy figures beside these products. None carries a method. E/M accuracy is claimed at 90 to 99% across 18 specialties. ICD-10 backing is put at 93%. Coded HCCs per primary care visit are said to rise 11%. The underlying customer release describes an 11% rise in documented HCCs per encounter across all trial participants. The homepage adds "95% coding compliance" credited to AAPC, and a "3x ROI" figure. No sample size, denominator, date or test set appears with any of them.

Specialty counts do not match across the site. The homepage and clinician pages say 200+ specialties. The Series C announcement of July 2025 says more than 100 ambulatory subspecialties, plus emergency and inpatient.⁹ No named list of specialties and no template count is published.

How Much Does Ambience Cost?

Nothing is published. No pricing page exists. No figure appears on the homepage, products, business, ambulatory, inpatient or demo pages, and the sitemap contains no pricing URL.¹

There is no stated minimum seat count, no tier structure and no list price. The motion is quote-only, and the demo form asks for organization name and role before a conversation starts.²

The product has been on Microsoft Azure Marketplace since April 2025. That is an enterprise procurement channel rather than a published price. That listing discloses no pricing or transaction model either.

Two figures circulate in third-party reviews and neither has a source. A competitor-authored review publishes "$233 to $267 per provider per month" and "$333 to $417 per provider per month" as industry estimates, neither of which carries a source.

Cost, trial availability and any minimum size are established in the sales conversation rather than published.

What Does the Evidence Show?

The published results come from four sources: a peer-reviewed Perspective article, KLAS's public page, a KLAS Spotlight report and a KLAS ROI validation. Each states its own scope and limits.

The peer-reviewed paper is a Perspective, not a trial. One paper appeared in npj Health Systems in August 2026. It describes how Cleveland Clinic rolled the tool out.¹⁰ Six of its twelve authors are Ambience employees, and they disclosed employment and equity in the company. The design carries no control group, covers one health system and one vendor, and reports outcomes that are self-reported or survey-based. Those outcomes cover 4,000+ ambulatory clinicians live in four months, 70% use per visit at 12 months among established users, an NPS of 60 and CSAT of 96.6%. The paper reports 60% agreement that the tool made staying in practice more likely, which measures what clinicians said rather than who stayed.

The KLAS base is small and the score is gated. KLAS covers Ambience under Ambient AI across 21 unique organizations, with data collected from September 2025 to September 2026.¹¹ The public page shows a market average of 75.5 and a software average of 80.1. Ambience's own score sits behind a login.

The Spotlight report is labeled as limited data. The Ambience page hosting that figure states "*The report was written with limited data."¹² Sample size, date and who paid for it are not given. The full report sits behind an email form.

The ROI validation was commissioned. The "$13K generated per clinician per year" figure comes from the St. Luke's deployment, alongside a 41% cut in chart closure time and 22% more patient face time. KLAS ROI Validations are commissioned by the vendor, and this one is attributed to Ambience.¹³ It covers one site on one EHR. The sample size is not on the landing page, and the report sits behind a form. A separate burnout figure from the same deployment is reported two ways. Ambience describes a 36% reduction in daily burnout among 49 providers. Fierce Healthcare, given the underlying data, describes a 36-point drop among 47.¹⁴ One is a percentage reduction and the other a percentage-point drop.

The head-to-head results were not published. Cleveland Clinic ran five vendors past 300+ clinicians over six months before selecting Ambience.¹⁵ The specialty count and the run time per vendor are reported differently across Cleveland Clinic's own accounts and the trade coverage. Reported use ran 80% during visits, put at two to three times the vendors tested. Pajama time fell 49.6%. Note writing time fell 25%. Those figures come from a Cleveland Clinic slide deck reported by Fierce Healthcare rather than an audited benchmark. The other vendors are unnamed and their results were never released. Adoption ranged from 99% in nephrology to 55% in urology.

Cleveland Clinic's own clinical publication describes a more modest saving from the same deployment: two minutes per appointment and 14 minutes per day.¹⁶ That figure and the vendor's framing describe the same rollout.

No independent controlled study of Ambience was identified. Two randomized trials in this category sit behind paywalls, so the products they tested could not be confirmed. Two vendors with published randomized trial coverage are compared in our review of Suki AI.

What Does Ambience Not Publish?

Three things are absent from the published material, and none of them concerns note quality.

No price, trial, self-serve tier or minimum seat count is published. The demo form is the only published route to a quote.²

No CPT tool is named. ICD-10, E/M, HCC and Modifier 25 each have one. No general CPT or procedure-coding product appears on the published pages, which bears on procedural specialties. The closest entries, Procedure Capture and Structured Billing Documentation on the emergency page, are documentation tools.

Security conformance is stated rather than documented publicly. Ambience states HIPAA, SOC 2 Type I and II, and GDPR conformance.⁵ SOC 2 is an attestation rather than a certification, and the site uses the word certification. The report is not publicly downloadable, and the Trust Center is a Vanta page that shows control detail only after a click-through. Data retention windows are not published, the privacy policy does not address whether customer data trains models, and subprocessors are not listed. On business associate agreements, the privacy policy says processing is governed by agreements "which may include Business Associate Agreements as applicable."¹⁷

Two figures differ across the site. Specialty coverage is given as 200+ on the homepage and as more than 100 ambulatory subspecialties in the Series C announcement.⁹ No accuracy figure on the site carries a method.

How Commure Scribe Compares on the Same Dimensions

Ambience sells to health systems. Commure Scribe can be bought by solo and small practices as well as groups. It runs a 7-day trial with no credit card. It lists 60+ EHR integrations, against the three Ambience publishes.

On the note itself, the value shows up right after the clinician clicks End Recording. Within seconds a structured SOAP note appears. Suggested ICD-10 and CPT codes sit in their own tab for the clinician to check. The clinician can review the note and revise it before anything reaches the chart. Recording runs up to two hours per session. It detects 90 languages on its own.

Two limits run the other way. EHR sync is copy and paste through a Chrome extension overlay at the solo and small-practice tiers. One-click sync belongs to medium and large group practices. Advanced integrations and admin controls sit with those larger tiers too. Ambience also packages coding more finely, with named HCC and Modifier 25 tools that Commure Scribe does not match.
