What You Need to Know About Nabla AI

  • Nabla AI is a clinical documentation platform used by 85,000+ clinicians across 130+ healthcare organizations, processing 20 million encounters per year.²²
  • Nabla offers two products: Nabla Copilot (ambient note generation from the encounter) and Nabla Dictation (real-time at-cursor voice-to-text), available separately or together.¹⁹
  • A 2025 NEJM AI randomized trial found Nabla users cut time-in-note by 9.5%. ICD-10, HCC, and MCC code suggestions are available; CPT coding is not a current feature. Nabla does not publish pricing.¹

What is Nabla AI?

Nabla AI is a clinical documentation platform with two products. Nabla Copilot is an AI medical scribe that listens to the clinician-patient encounter and generates a structured note within seconds. Nabla Dictation is a real-time at-cursor voice-to-text tool that converts spoken text directly as the clinician types, inside any application including the EHR¹⁹. Both run on web, iOS, Android, and Chrome. The platform supports in-person and telehealth visits across 35+ languages, including Haitian Creole, multiple Arabic dialects, and over ten South and East Asian languages¹⁵.

By mid-2026, the platform was in use by 85,000+ clinicians across 130+ healthcare organizations, processing 20 million annual encounters²².

How Does Nabla AI Work?

Nabla Copilot: ambient note generation

Nabla Copilot listens to the clinical encounter passively. The clinician starts a session, conducts the visit, and stops recording. A structured SOAP note appears within approximately 5 seconds¹⁵. The clinician reviews and finalizes the note before it enters the chart. Audio is processed in the browser and never stored on Nabla servers¹⁵.

Specialty-specific note customization is available across the platform. KLAS Research rated Nabla's overall performance at 90.9 in October 2024, with an A+ rating on Likely to Recommend and Executive Involvement²⁴.

A randomized clinical trial at UCLA Health enrolled 238 physicians across 14 specialties. Nabla Copilot users cut time-in-note by 9.5% versus controls (p=.02)¹. Both scribes in the trial improved burnout scores, task load, and work exhaustion¹. The trial also noted clinically major inaccuracies "occasionally" in Nabla-generated notes, with a mean inaccuracy score of 2.8 on a 5-point scale¹. Clinician review of all notes before chart entry is required for any ambient scribe.

A JMIR AI rapid review found ambient scribes show promise in reducing documentation burden⁶. Large-scale real-world evidence remains limited.

Nabla Dictation: real-time at-cursor voice-to-text

Nabla Dictation launched in February 2025¹⁹. It enables real-time voice-to-text at the cursor position inside any application. Unlike Copilot, which generates a complete note after the visit ends, Dictation converts spoken text as the clinician types. Custom dictionaries and voice-activated shortcuts are supported. Dictation is available as a standalone product or paired with Copilot¹⁹. LCMC Health deployed both products together in a system-wide rollout across 8 hospitals and 2,800 clinicians in December 2025²⁰.

EHR integration

Nabla connects to EHRs through Nabla Connect, an iFrame embed launched in October 2025 that supports bidirectional sync¹⁵. It pulls patient context from the EHR and pushes notes and diagnoses back. SMART on FHIR, SSO, SAML, and SCIM are all supported¹⁵.

Named EHR partners include Altera, athenahealth, Epic, Greenway, Nextgen, and Oracle¹⁸. Nabla AI joined Epic Toolbox for Ambient Voice in October 2025¹⁵. In its first year on the athenahealth Marketplace, 30+ provider groups adopted the tool¹⁵. Providers should confirm their specific EHR is among the supported integrations during the evaluation process¹⁸.

Compliance and security

Nabla AI is HIPAA compliant, SOC 2 Type II certified, and ISO 27001 certified¹⁶. Nabla AI is also GDPR compliant and follows the NIST Cybersecurity Framework¹⁶. Notes are stored for 14 days by default; organizations can configure a shorter retention window¹⁷.

A Business Associate Agreement (BAA) is a HIPAA-required contract that must be in place before any vendor can handle protected health information on a covered entity's behalf. Recording live patient encounters without a signed BAA creates a HIPAA compliance exposure. Nabla AI provides a BAA on paid plans. BAA availability on the free tier is not confirmed¹⁶. Providers planning to use any ambient scribe in a clinical setting should confirm BAA status before use. For a broader look at compliance in AI scribing, see HIPAA-compliant AI note-taking.

Coding features

Nabla AI offers ICD-10, HCC, and MCC code suggestions as a toggleable feature listed as "Smart Coding Suggestions" on its EHR integration page¹⁵. CPT coding is not a current feature. The June 2025 Series C announcement named a "proactive coding agent" as the next phase of the product roadmap¹⁵.

On the research side, Nabla CEO Alex LeBrun co-founded AMI Labs alongside AI researcher Yann LeCun. Nabla announced a strategic partnership that gives it early access to AMI's "world model" technology for clinical applications²⁵. STAT News noted that as of the announcement, no formal equity agreement between Nabla and AMI was in place²⁵.

How Much Does Nabla AI Cost?

Nabla AI does not publish pricing on its website¹⁵. Paid plan pricing requires a demo or sales contact as of June 2026¹⁵. Third-party dollar figures for Nabla AI are not confirmed by the vendor and should not be relied on for budget planning.

Nabla AI offers a free and paid tier structure¹⁵. The free tier provides ongoing access with volume limits and does not expire like a time-limited trial¹⁵. Medical students and residents have access to a separate unlimited free tier¹⁵. The standard free tier does not include a confirmed BAA. Under HIPAA, a signed BAA must be in place before a vendor handles protected health information on a provider's behalf. Providers intending to use the free tier for live clinical documentation should verify BAA availability before use¹⁵. Paid plans include BAA availability and additional features.

Who Uses Nabla AI

Enterprise health systems are Nabla AI's confirmed customer base, with 85,000+ clinicians across 130+ organizations as of June 2026²².

University of Iowa Health Care deployed Nabla Copilot across its clinical teams. A case study reported 2.6 hours saved per clinician per week and a 26% sustained burnout drop at two years¹⁵.

Denver Health cited Nabla's in-browser audio processing design as a specific requirement for its behavioral health teams¹⁴. Audio is never stored on Nabla servers, which is relevant for providers in psychiatry and mental health who work with sensitive patient disclosures. State mental health privacy laws often exceed federal HIPAA standards and can affect what is recordable and how notes are stored. For a breakdown of how ambient scribes are used in psychiatric documentation specifically, see AI scribes for psychiatry.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) deployed Nabla Copilot following a successful pilot, with specialty templates configured for pediatric care²³.

LCMC Health selected Nabla for a system-wide rollout across 8 hospitals and 2,800 clinicians in December 2025, deploying both Copilot and Dictation²⁰.

University of Toledo Health scaled Nabla's ambient AI following a pilot that reported 29% faster chart closure and a reduction in open chart backlog from 400+ to fewer than 30 open charts within 8 weeks²¹.

Individual and early-career clinicians can access Nabla AI through the free tier. Medical students and residents have access to a separate unlimited free tier¹⁵.

Key Considerations Before Choosing Nabla AI

CPT coding. CPT coding is not a current Nabla AI feature. ICD-10, HCC, and MCC code suggestions are available as a toggleable option¹⁵. A proactive coding agent is listed on the product roadmap as of June 2026¹⁵. Providers who need CPT coding integrated into the scribe workflow will need a separate process until that feature is released.

Pricing. Nabla AI does not publish pricing. Paid plan cost requires a demo or sales contact¹⁵. The free tier has volume limits and does not include a confirmed BAA — a HIPAA-required contract that must be in place before any vendor handles protected health information on a provider's behalf¹⁵.

EHR coverage. Nabla Connect lists 14+ EHR integrations¹⁸. Named partners include Altera, athenahealth, Epic, Greenway, Nextgen, and Oracle. Providers should confirm their specific EHR is among the supported integrations during the evaluation process¹⁸.

Transcription accuracy. The NEJM AI trial noted occasional clinically major inaccuracies in Nabla-generated notes¹. Nabla does not publish a transcription accuracy percentage on its website¹⁵. Clinician review of all notes before chart entry is required.
